About the role

The role will primarily involve conducting face-to-face surveys within the communities of Akkar and the North in Lebanon. This research is intended to collect information on social tensions and related dynamics within these areas. The Data Collector will be responsible for conducting approximately 150-200 household interviews over a 5-6 week period, ensuring the collection of high-quality data that accurately reflects the community's perceptions and experiences. The Data Collector will report directly to ARK’s Field Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct household surveys (approx. 30 minutes in length) with randomly selected respondents:
  • Locate and visit households as per the survey protocol.
  • Ask questions in accordance with the instructions to obtain information as specified.
  • Explain survey objectives and procedures to respondents and interpret survey questions to help respondents’ comprehension.
  • Assist individuals in filling out the surveys.
  • Review the data obtained from interviews for accuracy and completeness.
  • Compile and record data from surveys using a computer or a specified form.
  • Identify and report problems in obtaining valid data.
  • Coordinate movements with the direct supervisor and report on daily activities.
  • Undertake basic security assessments prior to visiting a given area.
  • Attend training workshops and coordination meetings as required.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and confidentiality requirements when handling respondent data and information.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting fieldwork, preferably in social research or community engagement projects. A minimum of one year of relevant experience in data collection or field research is preferred.
  • A history of working effectively within teams, as well as independently managing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with, and proximity to, the regions of Akkar and North Lebanon, including cultural sensitivities and dynamics.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and devices for data collection (e.g., tablets, smartphones, and related software).
  • Ability to understand and implement complex survey instruments and recruitment protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, essential for interacting with survey respondents and community members.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to navigate discussions around potentially sensitive topics.
  • Language proficiency in Arabic is essential, given the target communities.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage time effectively and handle the logistical challenges of fieldwork.
  • Problem-solving skills and adaptability to overcome fieldwork challenges and ensure the quality of data collection on schedule.
